Highlights
This event tonight at the Museum of Science is sold-out! I am super excited to be moderating this panel:
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 15 at noon Pizza and Politics Confronting the Legacy of Racial Terror: A Personal Narrative in Alabama Lanita Foley (Zoom link below) After her first visit to South Africa, Lanita Foley, a Southerner once removed and an adjunct professor in Communication Studies at Emerson College, took a trip to Alabama to collect soil for a project sponsored by the Equal Justice Initiative in 2016. She was the first in her family to return to the state after a life-long warning to “stay out of Alabama.”
In 2018 this soil collection project was incorporated into the National Memorial for Peace and Justice and the Legacy Museum in Montgomery. According to a recent article from The New York Times, this memorial and museum receives “almost 40,000 visitors a month and cost almost $25 million to create” (Sheets, 2024). Applying her knowledge of foreign authoritarianism from her time studying at Stanford as an undergraduate to thousands of forgotten injustices in the United States, she invites her audience to go on a brief journey with her to explore the importance of seeing history for yourself and engaging in pro-democracy work in Alabama and beyond. Joining her on this episode of Pizza and Politics will be Evan Milligan, the first Executive Director of Alabama Forward, a former Program Manager at the Equal Justice Initiative, and one of the plaintiffs in Allen v. Milligan. He will help her to answer your questions about current opportunities and challenges in modern-day Alabama.
