Some people asked me why I took a class on Additive Manufacturing and Innovative Design. I realized that technology is making it essential to focus on the customer at all levels of business, rather than treating it as an afterthought given to marketing/advertising at the end. Marketers are often challenged to grasp technology and its potential impact. Engineers are often challenged to think through the eyes of customers. There is an opportunity to bridge that gap.

Technologies like additive manufacturing and generative design enable greater creative freedom and new capabilities to solve for customer needs. This opens up the product development and manufacturing conversation to benefit from a wider range of voices. I wasn’t sure how I would hold up in a class full of engineers using concepts and tools I had only heard about. But I put in some extra effort and scored 100% of points possible. It has further inspired me to keep learning.

Thank you to A. John Hart, Haden Quinlan and MIT xPRO for running a fascinating class. And thank you to Tanveer S., Aditya Nandwana and Will Murphy in my study group for expanding my understanding. Also, thank you to Steven D. Eppinger and Eli Itin in my previous Innovation and Design Thinking course, as it inspired me to look deeper into how I could use technology to drive innovation and solve for customer needs.
