What is your (least) favorite shared Micromobility regulation?

Movability has done a report on Regulations and the effects on Micromobility operations and market attractiveness for cities in Europe.

It shows cities, operators and suppliers how to:

  • Balance city goals and profitability
  • Which effect regulations have, based on different case studies
  • Where a city is in terms of levels of attractiveness based on demand

You can get it by going to our website and signing up for our newsletter here: www.movability.io/reports

But first, write your favorite worst-case shared micromobility regulation without naming city names (preferably!) and why in the comments below 😵

🤔 Should ride-hail apps sell transit tickets?

🚍 While listening to David Koral at the POLIS Network conference in November, I was intrigued to hear that FREENOW were selling transit tickets and that their customers were loving it. It was also interesting to hear the people in the room warning others that this was a bad idea.

🏦 It's common knowledge that Uber, Bolt and FREENOW make their biggest bucks on ride-hailing. Len Sherman did a piece on Uber take rates recently in Forbes (link in comments), that indicated commission rates up to 40% of the total fare.

🤯 Studies have also shown that ride-hailing has increased congestion and boosted the procurement of private cars.

🤷🏻‍♂️ The question on everyones mind this Polis session was therefore “why should a private app be allowed to bait users with cheap public transport to sell more taxi rides by putting the taxi option on the top”?

📣 I decided to interview David Koral for Zag Daily, because I thought it could be a good idea for them to sell transit tickets given the right governance. He confirmed my notion - FREENOW are willing to sell transit tickets under certain terms, such as displaying the most sustainable and cheapest route on top. Even if they weren't making money on transit.

🌐 This could also solve a potent issue for local Public Transit Authorities (PTAs) - how to sell transit tickets to tourists in a more hassle-free way, where they don’t need scores of local PTA apps to travel in Europe? Apps like FREENOW, Uber, Bolt or Citymapper may be the answer if they overcome the fears displayed at Polis that day.

😁 And besides, who better to make the UX of international transit travel more bearable than the ones that made ride-hailing so convenient?

Leave your thoughts in the comments!

Would love to hear from people working at Transport for London, Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) and STIB-MIVB if they think this is a good / bad idea.
