In July, Gartner released their #Hype #Cycle for Innovation Practices 2024, assessing various innovation vehicles and techniques in Innovation Management. For the first time, #Venture #Clienting has appeared on the Hype Cycle, positioned almost at the "Peak of Inflated Expectations".
This implies that Venture Clienting is #overhyped, and expectations are exaggerated. The Gartner model suggests that Venture Clienting will “fall before it can rise again and create value.” I believe this might hold true for corporates newly adopting Venture Clienting, but not(!) for the incumbents.
From experience - building and running a Venture Clienting Unit for almost 6 years now - with BSH Startup Kitchen, I don’t see any hype for established units like ours.
How to avoid the #Hype and #Fall of Venture Clienting Units?
Key success factors for long-term success are: 🎯 Setting realistic expectations and goals 🛠️ Respecting operational challenges and struggles 🏢 Recognizing that a Venture Clienting Unit is NOTHING without the backing of corporate structures and its decision-makers across all departments
The traps to avoide - especially for new entrants: ⏳ Expecting too much in a short time frame 📣 Overcommunicating impact to stakeholders 💸 Hiring (expensive) consultants that ruin your cost base and ROI ⚠️ Implementing “process short-cuts” that will only drive-down long-term adoption of startup solutions
Hence, let’s respect the hype cycle and approach Venture Clienting with the necessary caution and realism to ensure its sustainable success.
