When a candidate interviews: many recruiters recommend folks follow the STAR method- which is a great practice! When I prep folks to speak to qual & quant skills: I tweak the STAR method, recommending marketers and right-brain folks consider a Hero narrative and a three-act structure... which does not contradict the STAR method.

I believe these 2 storytelling methods- tasks and outcomes & the hero/ine journey- can dovetail into interview success. This is why I've L O V E D connecting with Liz Morrison, a Storytelling coach: https://lnkd.in/gfXGMS68

We were introduced via Groundfloor Oakland, as the membership algo felt we would get along- and it was right! Liz runs events, workshops, and 1:1 coaching sessions, strengthening folks' skills to tell linear, engaging stories with confidence to others. Building up storytelling skills translates into people's personal lives- friends, romance, and family- as well as our professional lives. Telling a good story matters in how folks show up for interviews, ofc- and more ambiguous meetings, like a meet & greet with new collaborators or an industry networking event.

I had a 1:1 session with Liz, as well as attending a fun workshop about disastrous travel stories. I highly recommend reaching out to Liz, if you feel your storytelling skills could use a refresh/refocus. Professionally: while Recruiters can be a little too focused on interview methodologies & success (guilty as charged): Liz prioritizes how you feel about your career, and contextualizing the chapters that make up your whole. Specifically: she has a focus on helping folks mid-career transition, to frame a narrative around the change.

Results are great to speak to when one interviews. They matter. Liz can be a great coach to help folks remember why they're journeying through their career, and what their inciting incident was that drove them forward. For me: Liz was a great check on the systems/methods/best practices/focused outcomes in Recruiting that can dominate conversations- balanced by seeing the heroes we hire. <3
