I'm sharing some thoughts after hundreds of Bumble Inc. employees lost their jobs this week.

This is my 3rd layoff - something that 27 and 30 year old me felt shame and fear around addressing after the fact. Younger me craved hearing this, and older me will surely need reminders:

  1. One can be positive, exhibit grace and professionalism in difficult situations, while affirming your own and others' humanity. This is actually the best part of working with humans! (I said what I said, AI). Take the opportunities to acknowledge your job loss, and whatever else you may be mourning - you'll find a way to share that aligns with your personal brand and identity (mine, it turns out, is a #sensitivegirlie post on LinkedIn!)

  2. You'll receive many kind words and offers for resources. This may not give you the motivation to BE resourceful, though. Set aside your pride (she's never done something that courage couldn't do better, ugh she is LOUD though), and seek more than a contact or warm lead - such as; friends to practice telling your story with, groups who can ideate with you, mentors whose vantage point allows them to see opportunities you don't.

  3. Some colleagues and leaders will be very adept at offering support and humanness, and most will not. The folks who remain are also in shock, hurting, anxious for their roles and the path ahead, which is deeply valid. You'll remember when your drive to protect yourself and your team led you to adopt Business As Usual protocols. Right now is a good opportunity to ask, how can you be in integrity with yourself the next time you're on the other side? And then next time, do that.

I have many privileges that afford the security of my family in the weeks ahead along with the confidence that comes with being established in my career. But gosh, this departure from Bumble is particularly poignant, tender. I was engaged in my best and absolute favorite work at a company I adore! I thrive leading people, am truly obsessed with my colleagues, and passionate about making anywhere and anything better and safer for women.

My sweet spot is leading mission driven marketing strategies, creating culturally relevant campaigns, forging unique partnerships, and engaging communities, always. Ideally, this is done in concert with folks who choose to bring their human selves to work, with equal commitment to building workplaces for the many who don't see a future where they can, yet.

Experience has proven that what's next will also be very good - but, if we skip over the period of loss, we'll do a disservice to ourselves and the culture we strive to carry.

OBVIOUSLY, my fellow former colleagues, I hold you in the highest regard and am here for you - check on me too, ok?
