Highlights
The #SocialSectorInfrastructure is the support system that helps the social sector thrive. It is essential but not always fully appreciated. I have had the great fortune to be part of the social sector infrastructure in a number of capacities over the years: as a staff member providing infrastructure services to foundations looking to build their capacity to engage with federal agencies, to community foundations that want to start impact investing; as a funder of infrastructure organizations focused on building the policy and data environment for charitable giving; as a user of infrastructure services by attending trainings and conferences that furthered my professional development and strengthened my relationships in the field; and most recently, as a researcher of the infrastructure Urban Institute developing a definition of social sector infrastructure and examining its current state and what it needs for the future.
Today we are kicking off #SocialSectorInfrastructure Week, a time to celebrate the social sector infrastructure, by releasing three new publications on the social sector infrastructure, hosting a virtual event open to the public, and releasing the first in a three-part blog series on our key findings. And check out our new Urban Institute and George Mason University - Schar School of Policy and Government publications: 1) a report on the state of the national social sector infrastructure and how to strengthen it; 2) a report on the overall sizes, revenue structures, and financial health of national social sector infrastructure providers; and 3) a guide offering overarching objectives and action steps for strengthening the national social sector infrastructure.

The US social sector plays a vital role in supporting our democratic society. But what types support does the social sector need, and who provides it? Along with Faith Mitchell and Alan Abramson, I've been proud to co-lead the Urban Institute and George Mason University Social Sector Infrastructure project, which aims to help the social sector thrive by better understanding what the infrastructure is, its current state, and needs for the future.
Today, we published a report, infographic, interactive feature, and blog about the infrastructure, or support system, for the social sector. This first set of publications puts forward a broad definition that we hope captures the full breadth of the social sector and its infrastructure.
From now until February 10, you can suggest additional activities and national infrastructure providers to include on the interactive feature, so make sure to check it out.
