Lauren Shaw

Tenured Full Professor, Emerson College

Lauren Shaw is an accomplished professional with an MFA in photography from the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design. She holds a tenured position as a Professor in Visual and Media Arts at Emerson College, where she has been imparting knowledge in the field of photography for an impressive 43 years.

Not only is Lauren dedicated to teaching, but she has also made significant contributions to the photography community. She co-chaired the National Conference titled 'Transforming the Mirror: Women in Photography' in 1997 and played a key role in establishing the New England Women in Photography group.

Throughout her career, Lauren Shaw has been recognized for her artistic endeavors and educational initiatives. She is the recipient of two National Endowment Regional Grants and has secured 11 Faculty Advancement Fund Grants. Her work has been exhibited extensively across the United States, including prestigious institutions like the Getty Museum, Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Fogg Museum, High Museum of Art, Art Institute of Chicago, Library of Congress, and the Newark Museum.

Among her notable projects, 'Maine Women: Living on the Land' garnered significant attention. This project included an exhibition at the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland, Maine, as well as screenings of the accompanying documentary film at the Maine International Film Festival. Another acclaimed documentary by Lauren, 'A Drop in the Bucket,' received critical acclaim and awards at various film festivals across the country.

In 2014, Lauren completed her latest feature documentary, 'Angkor’s Children.' This film explores Cambodia’s cultural and artistic renaissance through the perspectives of three young women. With a unique approach, Lauren Shaw excels as a hybrid documentary photographer and filmmaker, utilizing both analog and digital time-based media in her creations.
