Laurence Luu

Postdoctoral Researcher at UNSW

Laurence Luu is a Chancellor's Research Fellow (CRF) and lecturer in the chlamydia research group at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS).3 He previously worked as a postdoctoral research associate at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Prof Ruiting Lan's group at the School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences.2

Luu's research focuses on:

  1. Chlamydia host-pathogen interactions3
  2. Genomics, proteomics, and bacterial evolution2
  3. Investigating how Bordetella pertussis, the bacteria responsible for whooping cough, adapts against current vaccines and re-emerges to cause disease2

During his PhD at UNSW, Luu studied the evolution of Bordetella pertussis in response to vaccines.1 His discovery of new proteomic adaptations associated with increased fitness in the Australian epidemic B. pertussis population garnered widespread media attention and led to a national call to improve whooping cough vaccines.1

Luu has received several awards, including:

  • Fresh Science (2019)
  • ASM NSW-ACT Branch Postdoctoral Award (2019)
  • Best Poster Prize at UNSW Cross-Faculty Biomedical Symposium (2018)

He is also a Communication Ambassador for the Australian Society for Microbiology (ASM)2, demonstrating his commitment to science communication and public engagement.
