Highlights
Have you noticed that, the more intelligent a person is, the more likely they are to believe in the power of facts to win their arguments? That the brighter the person, the more attracted they are to a losing tactic? Why is it a losing tactic? Because statistics, data and “proof points” are simply not persuasive. If they were, the world would be ruled by a lot more technocrats and significantly fewer populists. So why are intelligent people so determined to deploy facts when they want to persuade? I suspect it is because we all tend to believe that other people think in the same way that we do. So, the more thinking and logical a person is, the more they are convinced that logical thinking is the way people make decisions. But it isn’t – not even for intelligent people. The truth is that, while human beings have evolved to be smarter than any other animal on our planet, we are still animals. Animals are instinctive beings, and we humans are also instinctive beings. We tell ourselves we are logical, but we are helpless when confronted with our instincts. And what is our instinctive reaction to statistics? Excitement? Awe? Or could it be, if we are honest… boredom? I am not saying people should never use stats or facts when they seek to persuade, just that they are not persuasive in the way we like to think they are. Good arguments should be based in facts, but facts do not make good arguments. The latest piece in my series on how to sound like a leader is out now… and this time it’s all about the power of repetition. The repetition of specific words, phrases, sentence patterns – and also the repetition of themes (Abraham Lincoln was ninja-level good at this). Why does repeating yourself help you to sound like a leader? Because when we get excited we naturally repeat ourselves. When we choose to repeat ourselves consciously we are communicating to people that we are excited and that excitement is infectious. You deliberately sound excited to excite other people. And if you can get other people excited, they are more likely to follow you.
