May 5 · linkedin

For the 2nd year, I spent 72 hours with other nutrition experts and produce industry professionals. From the people who grow our food to the people who distribute it, market it, and sell it. All the way to the professionals that provide us content and influence our eating behaviors through evidence based communications.

It's honestly the most beneficial and impactful 72 hours of my year.

🍎 New innovation in grab and go fruit and veggie options to help make it delicious and convenient to #haveaplant on the go

🍌 Business case for incorporating healthy food spending into your business model to support those with the benefit

🍊Story telling and communicating with influence

🥑Recipe ideas, produce pairings, and #producehacks to incorporate into offers and communications

🥕Community. Talking shop, hearing other people's successes and failures. There's no competitive advantage. Everyone just wants to increase fruit and veggie consumption to help change the trajectory of health.

🍓Sustainability in our homes and how to avoid food waste.

🍐Education from the farmers who grow our foods. Their stories and debunking food fear through facts straight from the source. Learning how we can help amplify their stories. Every food on our plate was grown by a farmer.

Thank you to the International Fresh Produce Association #haveaplant and the Foundation for Fresh Produce for getting all the right people in the room and curating the content we need. Thank you to the amazing sponsors who help fund the event.

Remember.... everytime you eat, have a plant.

I spent 72 hours refilling my cup from the impactful content and inspiration from my fellow nutrition experts at the International Fresh Produce Association annual Consumer Connection.

As an invited guest, I had the privilege to spend a few moments with the granddaughter of Frieda Caplan, founder of Frieda's Produce.

Have a moment for a quick story?

In 1956, Frieda Caplan was a new mom who wanted to work. She looked for a job that offered odd hours so she could still be a full time mom. Super mom. Who needs sleep? She found her way to the produce markets. 2am wake up call? No problem.

Her exceptional salesmanship quickly gained her a spot on the floor of the Seventh Street Produce Market in LA.

But in 1962, she decided to do it all on her own. She became the very first woman Produce wholesaler. And she changed what Produce looks like forever.

My favorite story? In 1979 she won Produce MAN of the year, but gave the award right back. That award was quickly renamed Produce MARKETER of the Year. 🌟

With a mission to bring unfamiliar fruits and veggies to our markets and our tables, she changed the trajectory of variety and adventure for the produce industry.

My two favorite things. Marketing AND nutrition. I'm absolutely hooked on her story.

Every time you eat, #haveaplant. And maybe, try a new fruit and veggie this week. You can thank Frieda for over 700 different kinds of fruits and veggies now available in our supermarkets.
