Project Percussion - providing the rhythm to help blend all the other parts into a cohesive assembly...

Undoubtedly the steady beat of a project comes from the updates. When variables, changes and adjustments are the norm, updates are how we rally around them and keep the music playing.

The beatboxer keeps the beat and for that we turn to the one with the most rhythm. For us, that’s project management. As the lead on all coordination and communication, the pulse of the project channels through them.

We pump our beats through Buildertrend speakers with the volume up so everyone involved can hear. We jamb out to all the tunes including, Daily Logs, Weekly Reports, Photos, Schedule, RFIs, Approvals, etc…

Every project synthesizes its own master piece, but the tempo is set across the board. Our tempo standards fall into 3 tiers, daily, weekly, and monthly.

Daily covers Logs, RFI’s and Approvals

Weekly covers Reports, Photos & Schedule

Monthly covers Budget and Pay Apps.

As progress unfolds, The Beat Goes On…

Managing the Approval Process

High-end, luxury, one-of-kind projects all point to a heightened focus on the finishes. The workmanship needs to be perfect, the detailing perfect, the colors, textures, materials, fixtures, finishes, everything perfect.

This is our world and we understand this, from the craftsmen to the supervisors, to the project managers, designers and architects. We are on the same page and respect each others contributions to the bigger picture.

Sounds like perfect harmony, but in a world where we are trying to make perfection out of imperfection, the process can cause friction. It can feel as though the members of the project collective are opponents rather than teammates.

Approvals can be extra challenging, as they tend to occur during the construction process when schedule and budget pressure are in full force. On the construction side there is the schedule and budget, on the design side, there is the quest for perfection.

As a construction manager its important to exercise empathy. Consider a piece of fine furniture where all the materials, textures and finishes come together as though the piece grew that way. Understand the pressure of being responsible for the final approvals on all the elements that make a space read like a piece of furniture. Those result are why the project exists in the first place.

With empathy, you can protect the process and stand up for it by managing expectations. If the schedule and/or budget need some room, present that feedback as part of the decision process. Keep everyone cohesively striving toward the same goal.
