Lei Wang

Associate Professor at Hawaii Pacific University

Lei Wang is an Associate Professor of Chemistry and Chair of the Department of Natural Science at Hawaii Pacific University. He joined HPU in September 2012 and holds a Ph.D. in Biophysics from Brown University.1 Dr. Wang's research focuses on protein aggregation, which is involved in various human diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and cataracts.1 His work aims to understand the molecular mechanisms of these protein aggregation events and identify natural compounds that can interfere with these processes to prevent or delay disease onset.1

Dr. Wang's academic background includes:

  • Post-doctoral fellowships at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich) and The Salk Institute for Biological Studies
  • Ph.D. in Biophysics from Brown University
  • B.S. in Physics from Wuhan University1

At HPU, he teaches various chemistry courses, including General Chemistry, Instrumental Analysis, and Biochemistry.1 Dr. Wang is also interested in developing bio-nano materials using amyloid fibrils, which are genetically modifiable natural bio-nanowires.1

Outside of his academic work, Dr. Wang enjoys traveling, running, hiking, swimming, diving, surfing, skiing, and spending time with his family.1
