And so, the first phase of my graduate studies comes to an end.
My original intention was to pursue a masters specializing in psychology, but over the last two years I realized that my natural inclination is not as much centered on the helping the individual directly, but rather on helping individuals indirectly by fixing/improving the systems that they live and work in. Put another way, within the dichotomy of “helping the many a little” or “helping the few a lot”, I lean toward helping the many. Thus, my next foray into graduate studies will likely be in the realm of public health, with a focus on tackling the loneliness and social isolation epidemic in the modern environment. But, I am grateful that I lived in an era that could allow me to explore these topics so deeply with professors from half-way around the world, while working in Tokyo. In the past, I would have had to quit my job to pursue full-time studies on campus somewhere and be “locked in” to that option.
In case anyone is considering Harvard Extension School (HES), here’s my quick review:
Pros
- High calibre professors from across the Harvard schools, and extremely engaged teaching assistants.
- I was genuinely impressed with the intelligence and diversity of the student population. It was not unusual to have CEOs, C-suite executives, entrepreneurs, professors from other universities, active military personnel, engineers, healthcare workers, and seniors in the same class.
- Effective use of remote teaching tools, such as facilitated discussion boards, reverse-style lectures, and great use of interactive LMS functionality.
- Flexibility to choose asynchronous remote, live remote, on-campus, and mixed participation classes.
- Course contents and flow are very well coordinated and logically structured.
- Massive course catalog and flexibility to change your focus as you proceed.
- Acceptance into the masters program is based on maintaining a minimum grade average (B or higher) for prerequisite courses rather than test scores.
