Leo Villareal

Owner, Villareal Studio

Leo Villareal is a New York-based artist born in 1967 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, known for his intricate and rhythmic artworks created using LED lights.

Villareal's installations involve the use of custom programming code that continuously alters the frequency and intensity of the lights in sequential patterns, resulting in dynamic visual experiences.

His works can be found in public spaces and museums like the Herbert F. Johnson Museum at Cornell University, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

One of his notable installations is 'Hive' (2012) at the Bleecker Street subway station in New York, featuring LED tubes arranged in honeycomb patterns that change colors in randomized progressions, interacting with the station's environment.

Villareal achieved acclaim with 'The Bay Lights' on the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge, a 1.8-mile long installation consisting of 25,000 LED nodes inspired by the surrounding area's kinetic elements like water, air, and traffic.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sculpture from Yale University and a Master's in Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) from New York University.

Leo Villareal is the owner of Villareal Studio, showcasing his innovative use of light and technology in art.

In 2016, his artistic vision was selected by the Illuminated River Foundation for a project involving 15 bridges across the River Thames, further solidifying his reputation as a leading light artist.
