Leopold Talirz

Computational Materials Scientist

Leopold Talirz is a computational materials scientist with a diverse academic and professional background. He holds a MSc in physics from ETH Zurich and completed his Ph.D. at the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology.2 Talirz pursued postdoctoral research in electronic structure theory at the University of York before joining EPFL (École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne) as a postdoc in the Institute of Chemical Sciences and Engineering in June 2017.6

At EPFL, Talirz contributed to building an open-science platform1 and was involved with the NCCR MARVEL project.3 His research at EPFL focused on combining machine learning methods with physical modeling for materials science applications.5

Recently, Talirz announced a career transition. As of February 28, 2024, he shared that he would be joining Schott AG in Mainz, Germany, in March 2024. His new role is dual in nature, serving as the head of computational materials science.4 This move marks a shift from academic research to industry application of his expertise in materials science and computational methods.

Throughout his career, Talirz has been active in scientific outreach and technology transfer, bridging the gap between academic research and industrial applications.3 His work spans various aspects of materials science, with a particular focus on computational methods and their application to scientific discovery and industrial innovation.
