We men are not great, to say the least, at being honest with one another about what’s really going on for us in our lives and in our heads. Myself and some Mates of a Certain Age decided a few years ago that we should try and be a bit more open with one another (just like our wives are when they meet up).

The Old Bastards – founded in 2019 as the Middle Aged Legends but renamed recently because, well, you do the maths – is a group of six of blokes who meet to enjoy each other’s company, strengthen the bonds between us, and support each other as we navigate our sixties and the health, career, family and financial challenges and conundrums we encounter.

We recently agreed the following about our gatherings.

Commitments

1.    We commit to regular attendance and to come willing to be open and honest.

2.    We commit to total confidentiality – “What happens with the OB’s, stay with the OB’s” – and never judging or belittling another’s contributions. Inappropriate humour and wind ups are encouraged if deemed necessary.

3.    No-one will seek to dominate the session and he can expect to be very firmly put back in his box should he bang on or be boring.

4.    Practical help or advice can be offered BUT there is no expectation that anyone can or should try to fix anyone’s else’s problems or is under any obligation to do anything other than actively listen and be fully present.

Process

Once we all have pint in front of us we begin our first round.

Round One Taking it turns each OB - starting with feet and moving up to the brain - will talk for no more than 5 minutes about his physical and mental health and anything which is particularly worrying him. Effusive rounds of applause will be given for low PSA scores.

Round Two Taking it turns each OB will talk for no more than 5 minutes about his family and relationships and highlight anything which is particularly exciting – anniversaries, grandkids, weddings – and/or more troubling developments or crises.

Round Three Taking it turns each OB will talk for no more than 5 minutes about his work and how he is doing reshaping life as we all try and work out the right balance in our lives of meaning, money and marriage as we move through our seventh decades on this earth.

The death of Gregor Henderson from cancer earlier this month, although expected, has nevertheless really shocked and saddened all of us involved in digital mental health.

A lovely, lovely man, a passionate advocate for mental health, a good friend and fierce craic.

I first met Gregor when he was the lead for mental health at Public Health England and I was chair of Togetherall. I went to an event at which he was speaking with the intention of recruiting him as an adviser to enhance our credibility by having someone of his high reputation alongside us. He readily accepted and he became an invaluable source of wisdom and advice to our company.

We are - were - about the same age and we spoke a lot about the joy of being grandads, how to continue to do useful work in our sixties, to avoid wankers, and to support and enable the generations of leaders behind us. He did all this with such panache.

When we last communicated in the few weeks before his passing he told me he was surrounded by the love of his family at his home in Italy.

So many people around the world will miss him so much and hearing his lovely Scottish brogue. His impact has been immense.

Rest in peace, brother.
