When I moved to California to work at X, the moonshot factory a few years back, I didn't expect to have the opportunity to work on breakthrough innovation from my home town of Newcastle!

Australia has long been a trailblazer in the renewable energy space and over the last year, X's team at Tapestry has been working with scientists at CSIRO in Newcastle to prototype new “smart” inverters.

Tapestry’s mission is to accelerate the transition to clean energy by making radically better tools for everyone who works on and manages the electric grid. Inverters will play a critical role in the energy transition as they transform solar and wind energy into usable power, but the technology we use today isn’t equipped to manage a grid run on dynamic renewables.

Tapestry and CSIRO’s new smart inverters have advanced sensors and software that allows them to communicate with other devices on the grid — like solar panels and batteries — and work together to maintain grid stability. If deployed widely, these smart inverters could help us transition much more quickly to an electricity system powered by clean energy.

Congratulations to Leo Casey, Julio Braslavsky, and your teams on this groundbreaking work, and thanks to Lauren Grillo, Jacquelyn Marker, Carly Schwartz, Shani Kaufmann and Camilla Ibrahim for bringing this story to life.

Behind the scenes snaps from this week’s whirlwind tour of Rio and São Paulo for MIT Tech Review's first ever Energy Summit Global with Gregory Manuel and Tapestry’s inspiring General Manager, Page Crahan.

It’s so exciting to help tell Tapestry’s story and highlight the potential these tools have to accelerate the global transition to renewables.  It’s also such a pleasure to work with leaders like Page who bring so much passion and expertise to their field and who are also just a bit ridiculous. I don’t know why we’re in that red box….but why not?!
