This post is about: Free Trade, Chewing Gum and Pizza. (Really.)

I recently met Tommy Koh and Ralph Ives, the 2 key negotiators behind the US-Singapore Free Trade Agreement, exactly 20 years after its signing! Hearing their stories firsthand really deepened my appreciation for their work and its impact on our nation.

My biggest takeaway? The success of our nations wasn’t accidental. Many things are carefully planned and developed over years, behind the scenes, and through hard work, not just by chance. The peace and prosperity I enjoy in Singapore today are the results of deliberate and visionary leadership, both locally and internationally.

Here are 5 key lessons I learned:

  • Free trade is the lifeblood of a healthy economy. It’s not just about trading goods and services but also about fostering peace and prosperity.

  • And, the secret to a successful agreement? Personalities, persistence, and...pizza!🍕 (The pizza story is funny and shows how small, thoughtful gestures can help break the ice.)

  • Chewing gum was indeed a sticky issue! 😅 It became a key point because while LKY had banned the sale of chewing gum in Singapore, a major US player owned a large chewing gum factory. An artful compromise was reached, allowing the sale of medicinal chewing gums by prescription. Phew.

  • Neutrality isn’t just a “convenient” stance, as some might think. Maintaining good relations with multiple countries offers a subtle but significant advantage, enabling us to serve as a trusted mediator. It’s a strategic strength.

  • The US-Singapore FTA is a great example of the benefits of free trade. It’s a win-win arrangement where both nations grow and succeed together.

A big thank you to The American Chamber of Commerce in Singapore (AmCham Singapore) for organizing this event, and to Adam Click for the generous invitation!

Ending with a selfies and photos from this iconic moment :)

If you’re looking for a thought-provoking piece on today's work and ambition, this insightful 3-part series is a must-read. Part 2 is my favorite—it explores "commoditized ambition," highlighting how much easier it is to adopt ready-made society-set goals instead of defining our own ones (which is what we really should be doing instead). Thanks, Snowbird Global, for this refreshing perspective on a Friday morning!

An excerpt:

“Here are some off-the-shelf dreams for you to aim for so you don’t have to spend too much time thinking about what you actually want.” Commodities are important for everyday life, but in this case they can corrupt personal motivation, making it driven by external factors rather than internal ones.

…

Maybe organic, home-grown, small-batch, hand-made ambition is where it's at.
