Senior Researcher & Director of Hispanic Institute at Child Trends

Dr. Lina Guzman is a highly accomplished individual serving as the Senior Co-Area Director of Reproductive Health and Family Formation and the Director of Child Trends' Hispanic Institute. Her primary focus is to provide expert research-based guidance to enhance outcomes for Latino children and youth in the United States. As the co-principal investigator of the Administration for Children and Families funded Center of Research on Hispanic Children and Families, Dr. Guzman leads efforts to offer valuable insights for improving programming and policies targeted at enhancing the welfare of low-income Hispanic families.

Dr. Guzman's role as the Center's Principal Investigator involves overseeing a comprehensive research agenda spanning various aspects of family wellbeing, including poverty alleviation, fatherhood and healthy marriage promotion, and early care and education. Beyond research, she is actively involved in communication and dissemination activities to ensure the widespread reach of the Center's findings. Moreover, Dr. Guzman focuses on capacity building through forging strategic partnerships within the research, policy, and practice domains, alongside an initiative to mentor and train young scholars dedicated to Hispanic family studies.

Her extensive research portfolio notably delves into topics such as reproductive health and union formation among minority teens and young adults, particularly emphasizing contraceptive decision-making and reproductive health services. Dr. Guzman has spearheaded numerous national, state, and local surveys encompassing diverse subjects in both English and Spanish, with a core objective of developing culturally and socially appropriate measurement tools. Her prior experience as a Project Director at the University of Wisconsin Survey Center and later as a Senior Scientist at Child Trends underlines her expertise in managing research initiatives and overseeing impactful projects.

Dr. Guzman's academic journey includes a background in Sociology from the City University of New York-Queens College, culminating in a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her commitment to advancing research and advocacy for Hispanic families is evident through her leadership roles at prominent organizations like Child Trends, where she has played integral roles in hiring, training, and mentoring bilingual researchers focused on enhancing outcomes for Latino families.
