Linda Wingerter

Linda Wingerter is a multidisciplinary visual and performing artist, third-generation puppeteer, and teaching artist.1 She is the founder of The Stringpullers Puppet Company, based in Ithaca, New York.23 Wingerter specializes in various forms of puppetry, including cardboard puppets, marionettes, and shadow puppetry.3

After graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in Illustration, Wingerter worked as a children's book illustrator before returning to puppetry.1 She revived her family's puppet company in 2011 with her first full stage production, "Luna's Sea," which debuted at the American Museum of Natural History.1

Wingerter has taught puppetry at numerous institutions, including Yale School of Drama, Cornell University, Quinnipiac University, and Fairfield University.12 She has also participated in the O'Neill Theater Center's National Puppetry Conference and received the Jane Henson Writing Scholarship Award in 2014.1

In recent years, Wingerter has expanded her work to include filmmaking. In 2021, she received a micro-commission from Heather Henson's Handmade Puppet Dreams film series to produce "Misophonia," a shadow and paper puppet short film.23 This film has been screened at various festivals and has won several awards, including Best Film at the Reel Puppetry Film Festival and Runner Up Best Animated Short at the Woods Hole Film Festival.3

As a teaching artist, Wingerter is passionate about sharing her knowledge of puppetry and kinetic art with both young people and adults. Her work often explores the motion of the world around us, focusing on subtle movements that capture the essence of life in her puppet creations.4
