Lindsay Avner

Founder, Bright Pink and Women's Health Advocate

Lindsay Avner is the founder of Bright Pink, a nonprofit organization dedicated to breast and ovarian cancer prevention and education. She made headlines in 2006 when she became the youngest woman in the United States to undergo a risk-reducing double mastectomy due to her BRCA1 gene mutation and a family history of cancer. This personal experience highlighted the lack of resources available for young women at high risk for these cancers, prompting her to establish Bright Pink in 2007.134

Career and Contributions

Under Avner's leadership, Bright Pink has evolved from a simple website into a national organization that empowers young women with knowledge and tools to proactively manage their health. The organization has educated over two million women and healthcare providers, providing vital emotional support to thousands of high-risk individuals.14

In recent years, Bright Pink has transitioned its model to focus on venture philanthropy, supporting other organizations that align with its mission. Notably, in 2024, Bright Pink announced a $3.5 million legacy gift to establish the Preventive Risk Outreach And Cascade Testing (PROACT) program at Stanford Medicine, aimed at improving access to genetic testing for families at risk of hereditary cancers.24

Current Role

As of now, Lindsay Avner serves as a member of the Board of Directors for Bright Pink and continues to provide strategic guidance as a Senior Advisor. Her commitment remains strong in advocating for women's health and advancing initiatives that promote cancer prevention.124

Avner's journey reflects a profound dedication not only to her own health but also to the well-being of countless women facing similar challenges. Her work has significantly shifted the conversation around breast and ovarian cancer from mere awareness to actionable prevention strategies.13
