Does brand purpose have to be a big, lofty, societal, ethical raison d'être?

Nope.

If we force this to be the case, it’s likely to be insincere, irrelevant, waffle, or even worse – a messy mixture of all three.

Purpose is a brand’s genuine reason for existing. If that’s to make the most delicious marshmallows on the planet, then be proud of that! It must be authentic and relevant to what your brand does. Not made-up words about connection and love and a fairer society.

And we know it’s helpful and important to have a clearly defined one – a consistent and clear north star to guide decisions, more motivated and engaged employees because everyone is working towards the same goal, etc etc.

But – have some brands misunderstood purpose? Probably. I find it hard to believe that Maltesers were created to “help build resilience between women by laughing together through the tough stuff”. Hmm. It could be part of a campaign strategy, an insight about how people share chocolate, but a brand purpose? It just doesn’t feel true.

My top tips:

1.     Make it true. If you are creating a new brand purpose – especially if it’s for a brand that’s been around for a few years – make it true, relevant, and authentic. In short, don’t make stuff up, and don’t force something that isn’t right, it won’t help you or your customers.

2.     Don't pin everything on it. You can still do brilliant, meaningful things as a business if these are grounded in other elements of your brand strategy, without a big ethical, societal statement being your ultimate raison d'être. For example, your brand values can drive fair, ethical, and honest behaviour and decisions. Your positioning can associate you with issues that are important to you such as diversity and inclusivity.

So, let’s not throw out the purpose with the bathwater. It’s an important part of your brand strategy, but not the whole thing. And it’s pointless if it’s not true.

Don’t hate purpose.

Just create a good one. 😄

American car brand, Dodge, is making it's new EV model louder. Using a series of chambers, woofers and speakers it will generate the guttural roar of a gas engine.

Because rational arguments to change behaviour don't always work. But irrational ones can.

This is a beautiful example of looking beyond the logical argument to pursuade people to buy EV's and instead, tuning into a real, human perception and being highly creative in the solution.

Does it make logical sense? Not really. Might it work? Absolutely.
