I didn't realize it was the end of May until I scrolled Instagram and saw "May is Mental Health Awareness Month."
My first thought was, damn, it's the end of May? My second thought was, May of 2023? And the third thought was, those are some nice mental health reminders.
The post I stumbled across was a cutesy graphic containing tips to manage mental health and, well, bring awareness that we need to tend to our minds just as much as we need to tend to our bodies—the last three years brought a collective shift in awareness, for better or for worse. Covid impacted everyone's life differently, and we have barely scratched the surface of its long-term impacts. Fast forward to now, where folks are on high alert due to layoff announcements and what seems to be another mass shooting every other day; mental health is something that you shouldn't ignore.
I've recently re-committed to my yoga practice and started writing again, leading to noticeable improvements in how I respond to circumstances beyond my control.
Like any other human, my mental health ebbs and flows through different seasons. You should look after and take care of your mental health like it's a sweet little baby you just birthed into the world. It's something you should protect and intentionally make space for. It's saying no when you mean no. And sometimes, it's doing the hard thing now to benefit later, even if that hard thing is turning off the TV. (or, in my case, deleting TikTok) and being present with difficult emotions.
While not everyone may have a mental illness, we all have mental health, and it is crucial to prioritize its care and management.
