I've been brought on as a writing judge for the Scholastic Art Awards 2023 (a program run by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers and Scholastic)—the nation’s longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens.
When I was a lost teenager in foster care (and later, a young college student), I was encouraged to write AND TO submit to school anthologies and contests. That was the first step to realizing my art didn't have to be silent. It could exist. It could have an impact.
Writing in itself takes bravery— but to allow your work to be seen, critiqued, and evaluated...is frightening. I did it anyway, and so are teens today.
These opportunities set the foundation for my career as a professional writer and journalist, because it meant I had to devote myself to my craft. And to my bravery, my story, my vulnerability. I had to bet on myself.
There are so many teenagers growing up in a challenging world. Maybe they're not in foster care like I was, but many are dealing with grief on a personal and collective level, social media artifice and bullying, racial and systemic inequities, health and mental health issues, etc.
Writing not only provides a creative and safe process/outlet for exploration, but it transmutes the intangible, making life into art.
In this small way, I can support teenagers in their creative journey (and in their bravery) in the same way others supported mine.
