All of Israel mourns deeply today as we remember Hersh Goldberg-Polin, a 23-year-old Israeli-American, brutally taken from us. His mother, Rachel, spoke with a heart full of sorrow and love, saying, ‘Finally, my sweet boy, you are free.’ For nearly 11 months, we have yearned for the safe return of Hersh and all the hostages, clinging to hope amidst deep despair.

As the High Holy Days approach, we are reminded of the Sh'lach Lanu prayer: 'Selach lanu, Boreinu, ki chatanu; mechal lanu, Malkeinu, ki fasha’nu'—'Forgive us, our Creator, for we have sinned; pardon us, our Sovereign, for we have transgressed.' This prayer speaks not only of our need for forgiveness but also of our capacity to forgive, to heal, and to grow, even in the face of unimaginable grief.

The tragedy of Hersh’s death is a profound loss, a universe extinguished by terror. May his memory inspire us to seek peace, forgive, and strive for a world where such suffering is no more, and may we all find the strength to continue yearning for peace and healing. ✡️🕊️
