Lisa Hiwasaki is a social scientist with over 20 years of experience in international development, focusing on vulnerability & resilience among marginalized groups in Southeast Asia.

She is dedicated to sustainable equitable development through transdisciplinary, collaborative, and participatory methods, with a passion for enhancing the resilience of indigenous peoples, ethnic minorities, and women.

Throughout her career with the UN and various research organizations, Lisa has led numerous interdisciplinary projects in climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction, agriculture, and natural resource management, emphasizing social equity and local & indigenous knowledge.

Having worked in Japan, France, Indonesia, Vietnam, Canada, and the US, Lisa is trilingual and excels in intercultural settings, reflecting her upbringing in Australia and Japan where she developed bilingualism.

Her values of integrity and respect for diversity are evident in both her research endeavors and personal life.

Lisa's academic background includes a PhD from Yokohama National University, an MA from The University of British Columbia, a BA from Carleton College, and studies at Waseda University.

She has held positions such as Assistant Professor of International Development at the University of Rhode Island, Program Leader for Climate Change at the International Development Research Centre, and Social Scientist at the World Agroforestry Centre, among others.

Her involvement in organizations like UNESCO and various research institutes showcases her commitment to promoting sustainable development and inclusivity.
