MAYBE… JUST MAYBE YOUR PROBLEM IS NOT WORK / LIFE BALANCE

Years ago, I left the practice of law for a short period of time.

I was exhausted physically, mentally, and emotionally.

I thought I was not cut out to be a lawyer.

I thought I was not able to have balance in my life.

I could not be a lawyer and have the life I wanted.

Maybe it wasn’t any of these things.

Maybe I just lost my way.

Maybe I lost my sense of purpose.

Maybe it was “misalignment burnout.”

“A 2023 survey reported that 59% of Americans are experiencing burnout, of which 71% are Gen Z and 65% are millennials.”

“An alarming segment of youth is going through burnout—a state of mental, physical and emotional exhaustion caused by prolonged stress.”

It “happens when we constantly engage with environments and in activities that go against our innermost values and beliefs, leading to a disconnect between our true selves and professional identity.”

“Our behavior may be driven by external rewards such as money, reputation and the need to live up to others’ expectations instead of intrinsic motivation and inner harmony between who we are and what we are doing.”

If you are unhappy with what you are doing, maybe you need to rethink what the source of your unhappiness is.

🥿👠👞WALK A MILE IN MY SHOES…🥿👠👞

Are you a lawyer who THINKS you MAY want to work in-house?

It is not an easier job, trust me. It is just a different job.

Want to give it a whirl? Try doing a secondment.

What’s a secondment?

It is when a lawyer is assigned by the lawyer’s firm to work temporarily for a client company for the purpose of meeting the workforce needs of that understaffed company due to a company employee’s absence.

Recently, I chatted with my good friend Florence Z. Mao, a senior associate at Ogletree Deakins who recently gave it a whirl.

She was in private practice, but she was interested in seeing what it would be like to move in-house.

Florence did more than read about what it was like to work in-house. Florence temporarily made the move in-house through a secondment.

Whether she decides to move in-house or not, Florence shared with me that her secondment allowed her to do something even more important. It provided her with an opportunity to gain a perspective that did not have before.

With this perspective, she would be able to serve her clients better and bond with her client’s in-house lawyers in a way she had not done before.

What did Florence learn?

📌Respond, Respond, Respond.

📌Bedside Manner Matters.

📌Put Your Recommendation At The Top Of The Email.
