Highlights
I am so proud of my husband Brad Hilton for stepping into the role of Hero on Saturday. I stood there frozen with fear as I watched my husband rescue 5 people from drowning in Lake Ontario.
If you have children, please teach them how to swim and if you encounter a body of water you are not familiar with, please be on the alert! We should all be careful around our great lakes.
My take on the events:
Imagine watching someone live out your worst nightmare right before your eyes. On Saturday, August 17, 2024, my family and I went for a walk. We came upon a small beach on lake Ontario, where there were several families swimming, but they looked to be in distress. As soon as my husband heard someone scream “help” within three seconds he was in the water before his shirt even cleared his arm. My sister-in-law was standing right next to him to pull his shirt off as he dove into the water. She was also the first to call 911.
I stood on higher ground, completely paralyzed with fear. I watched the terrified parents on shore screaming. I saw my husband swim 50 yards in seconds. I watched him lift two small girls and a grown woman out of the water as he took a deep breath and went under himself and kicked like hell until he reached shore. Then doubled back for the other group that was struggling. After they were safely on shore, he went back again for the girl who had made it to the other side of the sandbar and was waiting to be rescued. Once he got to her, he had her wrap her arms around his neck and even though she didn’t speak our language, I know my husband’s sense of calm reassured her that everything was going to be okay.
How did this happen? About 20 feet from shore there was a dramatic sandbar going from 3 feet to over 10 feet deep. The families who could not swim, had no way of knowing that there was a sandbar there and had no way of knowing the danger that would befall their children.
What stuns me about this event is if we hadn’t been there, if Brad hadn’t been there, five people would be dead. Before we went for the walk my husband told me I could go enjoy some family time with my boys he would stay back with the baby. I insisted that he come for the walk with us. I had no idea how important it would be that he be on that walk.
There were several people on shore but none of whom had the strength and skill to successfully complete the rescues needed.
My children ( 4, seven months to seven years) are all in swim classes but they aren’t fond of swimming. They don’t fully appreciate the importance of learning how to swim, but after watching their father, save five people from drowning I believe my children will appreciate how important it is that they all become the best swimmers they can be. And we will certainly always use caution when participating in fun activities in our great lakes.
We are still #hiring! Know anyone who might be interested?
