Lizbeth Benson
Doctoral Candidate
Professional Background
Lizbeth Benson, often lovingly referred to as Libby, has carved a remarkable niche in the field of psychology and human development. With a strong academic foundation and a career steeped in research, Libby stands out as a dedicated and innovative scholar. She is currently a doctoral candidate at Penn State University (PSU), where she is deeply engaged in Human Development and Family Studies. Her focus is on harnessing the power of data – specifically intensive longitudinal data obtained through wearable sensors – to enhance our understanding of positive health and human development.
Before embarking on her doctoral journey, Libby excelled in her undergraduate studies, earning a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Psychology with honors from the esteemed University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2011. Following her graduation, she took on a pivotal role as a research coordinator at the University of Pennsylvania’s Positive Psychology Center (PPC). During her time at PPC, she coordinated two significant multi-million dollar research grants aimed at exploring Positive Health, funded by the prestigious Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Her expertise further flourished through her contributions to grants on Positive Neuroscience and Prospection, supported by the John Templeton Foundation. These experiences laid a solid groundwork for her future endeavors in research and academia.
Education and Achievements
Libby's educational trajectory has been marked by excellence and a commitment to advancing knowledge in the field of positive psychology. Starting with her undergraduate education, she engaged rigorously with the material, ultimately graduating with honors from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her passion for psychology and human development led her to pursue a PhD at Penn State University, where she is currently deepening her expertise and contributing to groundbreaking research.
Throughout her academic career, Libby has been involved in various research projects that delve into potent areas such as positive health, creativity, post-traumatic growth, and language. Her research interests reflect a desire to utilize quantitative methods to explore emotion, self-regulation, psychological well-being, and physical health across the lifespan. Notably, she is particularly fascinated by dynamical systems theories, which offer valuable insights into intraindividual variability and change over multiple time scales.
An integral component of Libby’s academic work is data visualization, which she employs as a vital tool to enhance understanding and communication in scientific research. By marrying creativity with solid analytical methods, she seeks to illuminate complex processes and generate novel ideas, all while sharing her findings with a broader audience.
Involvement and Community Engagement
Libby’s commitment to fostering a collaborative and innovative community is exemplified by her founding of the ‘We R: R Users Group’ at Penn State. This weekly meet-up serves as an invaluable platform for interdisciplinary dialogue, providing a space for both seasoned researchers and newcomers to share insights, discuss ideas, and collaborate on scientific endeavors using the R statistical platform.
Additionally, Libby is actively engaged in the project Playing the Archive, a collaborative initiative that brings together scientists, musicians, artists, and engineers. This unique project focuses on creating a rich, dynamic archive filled with data visualizations, sonifications (music), and haptic representations, which not only push the boundaries of data science but also creatively express the complexities of human experience.
Achievements
Libby's accomplishments extend beyond her formal education and organizational roles. By coordinating substantial research grants, she has significantly impacted the field of positive health and psychology. Her continued involvement in various research projects has helped illuminate critical aspects of human development and well-being, establishing her as a thought leader in her field.
