Highlights
Addressing homelessness requires an extremely comprehensive approach. Not only should we advocate for housing-first strategies and support programs to uplift those in need; we have to be intentional.
Due to extremely finite funding, lack of coordination and/or deliberate focus, we run the risk of “mixing and matching” or shoehorning interventions into programming where they shouldn’t be.
Workforce development pilots for those on a fixed income, shallow subsidies ($800/mo - as opposed to “deep” subsidies) for those who are literally or chronically homeless, focusing on the most vulnerable populations while forcing them to provide the documentation (recent paystubs, etc.) that we’d expect from someone in a less vulnerable position, high barriers to get into shelter to address street homelessness for those with substance abuse issues, etc.
Every intervention is not meant for every sub-population of people! There is no silver bullet!
