Loic Royer

Group Leader at the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub in San Francisco. Work at the interface between AI, Microscopy, and Biology.

Loïc Royer is a prominent scientist and Group Leader at the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub in San Francisco, where he has been leading research since 2017. His work primarily focuses on the intersection of computation, microscopy, and biology, particularly in understanding how organisms develop from a single cell into complex bodies composed of billions of self-organizing cells.

Educational Background

Royer's academic journey began in France, where he studied engineering, mathematics, and physics. He earned a master's degree in Artificial Intelligence, specializing in cognitive robotics, followed by a Ph.D. in Bioinformatics from the Dresden University of Technology in Germany. His doctoral research involved innovative approaches to analyzing protein networks using complex network representation.

Research Contributions

Dr. Royer is recognized for developing the first adaptive multi-view light-sheet microscope, which is designed to automatically adjust its parameters for optimal image quality. This technology allows for advanced imaging techniques that are crucial for studying developmental biology. His team also employs deep learning and artificial intelligence to enhance biological imaging and analysis, contributing to projects such as ClearVolume and napari, which are aimed at improving image visualization in biological research.

Current Focus

At the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub, Royer leads a multidisciplinary team that designs state-of-the-art imaging technologies and algorithms. Their current research includes building a time-resolved and multimodal atlas of vertebrate development, using zebrafish as a model organism to explore developmental processes.

Dr. Royer's combination of expertise in engineering, AI, and biology positions him at the forefront of innovative scientific research aimed at unraveling complex biological questions.123

Moreover, there is a possibility for very strong candidates who hold a Master to pursue a Doctoral degree for the work done in my team. This is arranged on a case-by-case basis with help from a European professor (easiest done in Germany) while working full-time on my team. This is decided 1 year after evidence of exceptional talent and conditioned on finding a willing Prof. (I have one instance of that in my team right now)
