Long Ju

Assistant Professor Of Physics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Long Ju is an Assistant Professor of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) who joined the department in January 2019.14 He specializes in condensed matter physics, focusing on light-matter interactions and electron transport in novel quantum materials, particularly atomically thin materials and van der Waals heterostructures.34

Ju received his B.S. in Physics from Tsinghua University, China, in 2009, and his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of California, Berkeley in 2015.12 Before joining MIT, he was a Kavli postdoctoral fellow at Cornell University from 2015 to 2018.12

His research has led to significant advances in the study of topological properties of graphene using novel optical and electronic probes.1 Some of his key achievements include:

  1. Demonstrating strong and tunable light-plasmon coupling in graphene
  2. Showing topological valley transport in bilayer graphene
  3. Observing exciton states in bilayer graphene with unique properties
  4. Providing spectroscopic evidence of strong electron correlations in ABC trilayer graphene/hBN moiré superlattice1

Ju has received several recognitions for his work, including the 2022 Sloan Fellowship and the 2015 Kavli ENSI Thesis Prize Award from UC Berkeley.1 He is considered a rising star in condensed matter physics by many of his colleagues.1
