Long Zheng

Professor and Director of Laboratory Medicine

Long Zheng is a distinguished Professor of Pathology and the Director of Laboratory Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, AL. His research lab is concentrated on uncovering the molecular intricacies of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), exploring the biology of ADAMTS13 metalloprotease, studying inflammation and microvascular thrombosis, and delving into vascular biology. Particularly, Long Zheng and his team are fascinated by the structure-function correlation of ADAMTS13, the enzyme responsible for cleaving von Willebrand factor (VWF), a crucial blood adhesion protein. Deficiency in ADAMTS13 activity, whether hereditary or acquired, leads to widespread microvascular clotting, a hallmark of TTP. Long Zheng is actively engaged in the advancement of innovative diagnostic tools and treatment strategies for TTP. Additionally, he plays a pivotal role in educating graduate and undergraduate students, as well as residents and fellows at the University of Alabama at Birmingham's School of Medicine.
