Did you know the average tenure of a CMO today is 39 months?
68% of the brand marketing leads we surveyed in The Marketer’s Forecast 2024 say they are at risk of being just corporate figureheads. How are they to make a meaningful difference to a company’s growth and realize the impact of these results in such a small period of time? In comparison, the average CFO term is 7-9 years…Food for thought. These were some of the discussion points shared in today’s presentation led by Kimberly Brown Oredugba Andrea Kerr Redniss Jonah Minton. Here are what I found were the big takeaways:
- With media inflation up 5% and biddable media up 20%, marketers have been so pressured to create demand, but this over indexing on performance has resulted in brand and product creation to be neglected
- Winning brands are focusing on attention, retention & loyalty which is replacing and/or augmenting traditional growth methods
- Of the top priorities for CMOs, operational efficiencies is 2nd only to financial performance & growth which brands are funding transformation initiatives across product, people, platform and partners
- While the % of DEI as a CMO priority decreased (whether this can be attributed to the implementation of DEI frameworks already being put into place or the pendulum shift to DEI being as a buzzword, the question remains). However, there is a distinct link to growth when MC is woven into the DNA of an organization. You want receipts? Take P&G’s brand, Pantene. They were not historically a brand that POC look to because their product didn’t work with textured hair. Realizing this, they started working with Black scientists, formulated new products to create the Gold Series, and now are speaking proportionately to the consumer and driving share in the marketplace (while still retaining customer base). Toyota is another brand that has always-on and holistic approach to multicultural.
- Finally, the creator economy is here to stay, but the opportunities are ripe to find measurement and planning solutions as marketers are spending upwards of $100MM+ and don’t have these frameworks in place Would love to hear YOUR thoughts on the future of the 2024 marketing landscape in the comments below.
