Lori L. Wilson, MD, FACS, was a prominent figure in surgical oncology and medical education at Howard University Hospital. She served as the associate professor of surgery, division chief of surgical oncology, and program director of the general surgery residency.12 Dr. Wilson was the first woman to hold the position of division chief and the first to be promoted to full professor in surgery at Howard University College of Medicine.4
As a surgical oncologist, Dr. Wilson operated on patients, provided clinical care, and managed a team of 33 residents in the general surgery residency program.2 She was known for her work in translational research, community engagement, and addressing health disparities.1
Dr. Wilson's career was inspired by watching the TV show MASH as a child, which sparked her interest in becoming a surgeon.2 She achieved her dream and became the first person in her family to finish college, going on to complete graduate school and become a doctor.2
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Dr. Wilson was also a breast cancer survivor. She often shared her personal experience with the disease to enhance the care she provided to her patients and to educate her students.34
Tragically, Dr. Lori Wilson passed away on October 14, 2022.4 Her legacy as a surgeon, educator, and advocate for patients with cancer in underserved settings continues to inspire many in the field of oncology and medical education.
