This image stopped me in my tracks.
As many have commented already – this is great example of a narrative that’s becoming increasingly dated. The idea that not having kids makes you less busy or responsible is not only, well - wrong - but it’s also a myopic view of what life looks like for many women with demanding jobs, families to care for/about, friendships to nurture, pets to keep alive, hobbies to nourish their lives with etc.
I’d go a step further to say how utterly sad it is that posts like this too often go unquestioned – that they’re (a) defining women’s thought processes through the lens of whether they’ve been a successful vessel or not and (b) that there is some binary lifestyle we women live – the haves and the have-nots.
Being a mother can, indeed, be demanding. Being neurodiverse can also be demanding. Nurturing friendships can be demanding. Being single can be demanding. Having a relationship can be demanding.
To foster a ‘grass is greener’ view of one or the other is to pitch us women against each other and that’s the last bloody thing we need. Women are richer than their decision to bear children or not, and the idea that we fall-in to one or the other category is both reductive and insulting.
Not 100% sure what more there is to say here, except that I struggle to see a place for this pseudo-sympathetic, binary drivel in a progressive discourse about achieving equality in the workplace…or any place for that matter. Motherhood is a factor, but so are many other features of our being which bring us together rather than drive us apart.
Thank you for sharing this Nicky Rampley-Clarke and Alia Jamal
