Finding ways to thrive in what sometimes feels like a desert of work opportunities can feel treacherous. However, I challenged myself to think of this part of my journey through the lens of the Great Sand Dunes in Colorado. My family and I went camping this week at this rare ecological occurrence.
At a glance and in our thoughts we often think of a desolation when it comes to metric tons of sand, blowing and shifting to the wind. And in some situations that may be the case. In my situation, I favor the Sand Dunes of the San Luis Valley as my mindset. The Great Sand Dunes are anything but desolation.
Life thrives and finds a way in the Great Sand Dunes. It sits between majestic mountains, wetlands, and plains. It teems with life and is a part of what feels like a mystical, sacred cycle. When you are in the dunes, it feels all-encompassing. However when we drove away from them, they merged into the scenery, the green mountains and plains dotted with yellow flowers absorbing it into a complete tapestry, a system that is not hindered by what seems to be a blot of sand.

As I await another month of applications and proposals to be reviewed, I needed a reminder as to why I went into non-profit fundraising in the first place. In February of 2011, my wife was very much pregnant with our son. I knew my free time to play games was going to be absorbed into being a new parent for a while, so if and when I would be able to play, I would use those moments for something more than "just" gaming.
I thought up the username "herobyclicking" as a way to illustrate the ease of giving to, advocating for, and fundraising with causes that online communities cared about. I was determined to make an impact for non-profits and communities worldwide, and I like to think over the last 13 years I have done that.
Over the years I personally have raised thousands of dollars for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital - ALSAC and various LGBTQIA+ organizations, but being an employee of an organization is where I learned the most about what it means to be a part of something greater. I have been honored to have led tens of thousands of creators, community members, and supporters in raising MILLIONS of dollars for causes they care about, mostly through genuine, thoughtful, and honest community building.
All the memories have been flowing back, all because I happened to see that my Blogspot blog was still up. That first post just sent me sailing on a nostalgic trip, and I am working hard to add another chapter to my career in fundraising.
