Highlights
Over the past month it has been a great experience to be part of the judging panel to recognise those in the advertising industry who began their career with an advertising degree and are achieving incredible outcomes. And what a gift for me to spend time with the esteemed judging panel of advertising legends, Simone Waugh, Chris Pash, Tony Hale and Leigh Terry.
Congratulations to Professor Gayle Kerr, Chris Colter, Matthew Moran, Justine Armour and Rem Bruijn and all those who were shortlisted in this celebration of 50 years of Advertising Education in Australia.
2023 will be a start of an exciting new chapter in my life as I ‘retire’ from QUT. The last 20 years have been a blast. Who would have known that when I started as a student at QUT in 1999 (an overachieving, very painful mature age student that questioned every grade) that I would happily stay on and work as a tutor then as a full time academic at QUT? A career that I never imagined but was perfectly suited for me. And what a ride it has been. It has been such a joyful time with so many highlights. And all through this time my friend and mentor Prof Gayle Kerr has made me laugh, been incredibly positive and encouraged me to achieve far more than I ever thought possible. She even let me contribute to her incredible Advertising and IMC textbook which I will forever be grateful for. We have presented our research and done some great trips to Sydney, Melbourne, Dallas, Albuquerque, Atlanta, Chicago, LA, New York, Amsterdam, Seattle, and I have met some amazing academics who are doing wonderful research and teaching throughout the world. It has been a tough few years for universities but I truly believe that there is no better place to work than QUT. Many thanks to Prof Ian Lings and to everyone in the School of Advertising Marketing and PR for your friendship and support. To our tutors who bring the Real World Learning into our classes, I can’t thank you enough for your support over the years. Our grads are a credit to the team who work at AMPR. So what is next? More time with my family (enjoying doing grandmotherly things) and friends and as you know (from my constant posting on social media) being the President of the Lady Musgrave Trust (who provide accommodation and support for young women at risk of homelessness) will be an important focus for me. We have some very exciting projects in place for next year. And I am trying to paint a bit more (check out my LouKellyArt Instagram page) and if I can get around to it maybe even learn to play golf (unlikely though). I will miss the people at QUT, the students and teaching and am grateful for the opportunities I have had but I am really looking forward to what happens next!
