"Founders still believe that an idea has a massive value, it doesn't".

Through his work at Antler, an idea stage startup incubator and investor, Dr. Jonathan Doerr, the Co-founding Partner at Antler in Middle East, North Africa and Pakistan (MENAP) saw 5000 applications from founders who are interested in joining Antler's first cohort in Dubai. Out of the 5000 applicants, 80 individual founders are accepted into the cohort and Jonathan will likely invest in 10 startups (~20 people who join together to form a startup).

That is a 0.4% conversion rate!

In my conversation with Jonathan we discuss what it takes to be a startup founder and more importantly what are some of the hard questions you need to ask yourself before committing to this journey.

Jonathan also shares insights from his days at Rocket Internet scaling Jumia Nigeria (IPO on NYSE) and Daraz in Pakistan (Acquired by Alibaba). We discuss the Rocket Internet model, what works and what doesn't and the challenge of building and scaling e-commerce in emerging markets.

A key insight? building e-commerce is not only about the assortment and the technology, you're also building payments infrastructure, logistics and more! That is why it takes north of $1bn of investments to get an e-commerce business to scale.

'Even though it started later, the venture (Venture Capital) community has built up much faster in the Middle East & North Africa (MENA) region versus growth stage Private Equity (PE). Startup founders are more aware of the option of raising capital from funds whereas in traditional businesses, they don't necessarily know that there is that option'.

I sat down with Huda Al-Lawati the Founder & CEO of Aliph Capital to get an insider's view into the world of private equity. Huda is a veteran PE executive having led $billion deals across MENA & Turkey with companies like Abraaj, Savola Group, Gateway Partners and she sits on the boards of ADC Acquisition Corporation (the first ADX listed SPAC), MAGRABi Retail Group, Saudi Fransi Capital and Hala (ADGM and CMA regulated fintech company).

We cover:

1/ Huda's own journey from investor to entrepreneur, building Aliph Capital and how she goes about hiring, building networks, sourcing deals, etc.

2/ Diversification in private equity is primarily driven by government mandates in the region and why Board of Directors should try 'harder' to have diversity, not just in gender but also in capabilities

3/ Where does private equity sit in a business' lifecycle. What type of business would be eligible and what can business owners expect from private equity funds?

4/ What type of private equity deals typically happen and what is more prevalent in the region and why?

5/ The problem with debt as a means to fund acquisitions and when should it be used?

6/ Some lessons and advice to people wanting to work in the industry.. what to expect and how to succeed

A fantastic conversation that gives a great overview of private equity in MENA and how established businesses can leverage PE funds for growth. I am personally very excited about this space!
