Our rectangular can design was our most distinctive brand asset, yet we ditched it..
When we launched Lick we went live with a rectangular can. There was little innovation as it had been used for decades to store oils, solvents and even paints and could be bought from all major can suppliers. The market however had moved to circular cans so it was not common to see a paint brand use this design.
When we launched, our minimalist design made us stand out in the UK and therefore quickly became an asset and it was frequently shared on social. It was unusual at the time to share images of a can, given the product was inside and on your walls and the can was just packaging. It became a strong asset for the business and helped drive conversion on ads and grow brand awareness, supported by our influencer strategy. This was compounded by the increase in decorating activity and decorating content online during covid, when we launched.
There were additional benefits of the can, it poured easily and stored well.
However there was a clear reason paint brands used circular cans. We began to get negative feedback from our customers; the lid would get stuck and it was hard to mix the paint, which is very important to ensure a high quality finish.
At the same time our brand became bigger than the can. We became known for our distinctive brand, our focus on sustainability, our high-pigment curated colour offering, the quality of our products and the obsessions with inspiring and supporting decorators transform our home. It was time to listen to our customers, ditch the can and move forward.
To change was a difficult and brave decision but one that seems obvious now.
The most important brand asset is the customer experience and that should be every consumer brand's priority!
