Luke Bronin
Luke Bronin is an American politician and lawyer who served as the 67th mayor of Hartford, Connecticut, from January 1, 2016, until January 1, 2024. Born on June 30, 1979, he has a diverse background in public service, law, and military service.
Education and Early Career
Bronin graduated from Yale College in 2001 and later earned his J.D. from Yale Law School in 2006. He also holds a Master of Science from the University of Oxford, obtained in 2003. Before entering politics, he worked in various roles, including as chief of staff to the president of The Hartford's Property and Casualty Division and as a partner at the law firm Hinckley Allen LLP.14
Political Career
Bronin's political career began with his role as general counsel for Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy from 2013 to 2015. He then successfully ran for mayor in 2015, defeating incumbent Mayor Pedro Segarra in the Democratic primary and winning the general election later that year. He was re-elected in 2019, securing nearly 60% of the vote against multiple challengers.126
During his tenure as mayor, Bronin faced significant challenges, including Hartford's fiscal crisis and the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. He implemented various initiatives aimed at economic development, public safety, and community engagement. Notably, he established the City of Hartford Office of Sustainability to promote environmental stewardship.256
Military Service
In addition to his political career, Bronin served as an officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve from 2007 to 2018. He was deployed to Afghanistan and participated in anti-corruption efforts during his service.13
Current Role
As of January 2024, Bronin transitioned to academia as a lecturer in law and Tsai Leadership Senior Distinguished Fellow in Residence at Yale Law School. He has expressed intentions to remain active in public service and politics following his mayoral term.346
Personal Life
Luke Bronin is married to Sara Bronin, a prominent figure in historic preservation law. They announced their intention to divorce in September 2024 after over two decades together.3 They have three children.
