What a way to end a rollercoaster of a year.
I've worn what feels like all the hats. Product Designer, Product Strategist, Front End Developer - now I'm in a one-size-fits all "Design Systems Consultant", starting my own freelance business. That feeling of imposter syndrome, that nagging feeling of "am I wearing the right hat?" never goes away. I'm learning to embrace it though - it's not a nagging feeling, it's an itch, an itch to do more, make things, satisfy curiosity. The only way for me to scratch that itch is to fuck around and find out.
Here's some of the FAFO highlights:
KC Oh and the Figma gang sent me an email. "Hey your Text Crop plugin for Figma, we like that, we're making it native". Leading to a wonderful collaboration opportunity, and an insight into product development for design software.
I gave my first conference talk at WebExpo in Prague in April, met some of my 'career heroes' and the most wonderful people. Thanks Nick Dorman, Geri Reid, Steven Wright, Šárka Štrossová and Jan Toman for believing in me. I can't wait to go back next year for more cheap beer and chats with the brightest minds in our industry.
I left an amazing team with the News UK Technology's Award Winning NewsKit Design System gang, and was worried I'd never experience a team like that again. Having a team that lets you explore your curiosities, and being in an environment of collaborators with a common goal all aligned to enable each other is an incredible privilege. I was scared of losing that.
A week later Mike Kamminga and Jan Six reached out – "Wanna work on our plugin" they said. "Hell yeah!" I said. Wow has it been great. I've learned so much. NewsKit felt like we were on the bleeding edge of design systems. Now I'm tiptoeing on the bleeding edge of the bleeding edge. I'm so grateful for the opportunities given to me, that allow me to give back through open source software, keynotes, panels and articles.
Thanks to zeroheight for inviting us to the Design System Awards, and thanks to our community of users for the nominations, feedback and loyalty. I'm so proud to be able to contribute a small part to an amazing team.
Theres no denying, winning feels great. But to me this award means more than that. It means the FAFOing is paying off, it means I'm in the right place, doing the right thing. The nagging is quieter, but the itch is burning. Look out 2024, I'm going to fuck around even more, and I'm going to find out a hell of a lot.
