It’s easy to think, “oh, I don’t need to make a post like this. I live in a progressive area of a progressive city in a progressive country.”
But, I don’t have to scroll far on my Facebook page to see homophobic and anti-Pride posts from noneother than my own family! Not to mention the many other haters out there like the one I ran into at a Puzzle 🧩🚀 offsite in my home state of Wyoming—talk about taking the “pride” of showing your home state off out of my visit to the Equality State. Thanks to my coworkers for standing up for me in that moment.
Last year I made a Pride post, and I felt a little silly about it. That Fall, someone in my professional network reached out to talk. Sure man, here’s my calendly. He was like, um, can we meet in person??
tl;dr he came out to me and now we’re good friends. I shined a light where I didnt really think I needed to.
I am a safe person.
I am a gay man.
If it were a choice, I took the hard one. (Spoiler, it’s not a choice).
Today also happens to be the birthday of my first boyfriend. He was a bit of a savior in a challenging time of coming out during college in a conservative place. Sadly, I found out he died earlier this year.
So, Pride comes with its hardships. Most of these are unspoken or buried—especially at work. It’s not always the presumed normative of dating, engagement, marriage, kids. Often our coping mechanisms lead to our downfall.
I’m grateful for the supportive people around me, and the chance I get to keep trying to make a difference for good—for others and myself.
