Highlights

As some may know, my wife Bonnie Johnston and I were both laid off in 2023 within days of each other. Although it was unexpected, we decided to treat it as an opportunity to take a sabbatical and accomplish things we would never have been able to otherwise.

After traveling across 8 countries, checking off multiple bucket list items, and creating lifelong memories with family and friends, we look back feeling incredibly grateful for this once in a lifetime opportunity (at least until we retire).

Now, refreshed and supercharged, we’re ready to re-enter the workforce with boundless enthusiasm and are actively pursuing new opportunities.

Any referrals or introductions from our networks would be greatly appreciated.

My previous role was as a Strategic Partner Manager supporting national channel partners.

Bonnie is pursuing roles in executive onboarding, corporate learning, leadership development, and HR consulting.

Looking forward to an incredible 2024!

My wife Bonnie Johnston and I were both laid off unexpectedly in the past 2 weeks. She was let go first. Caught in the dreaded RIF, aka Reduction in Force.

We talked about it and after the initial anxiety, agreed that we would be okay. We have savings and she would still have health insurance through my plan until she could find a new job. Sweet relief, right?

Then, the other shoe dropped. On Thursday morning, I was informed that my position was being eliminated due to the same type of RIF. Cue existential dread.

I do not begrudge either of our companies for the decisions they had to make. We’re not naive to the macroeconomic factors that are forcing many, many companies to make similar cuts. I loved my time at RingCentral working alongside incredible people. I will truly miss them and wish them and RingCentral endless success.

Going from dual income to zero income within a 2 week period brings plenty of anxiety, but we have always been fiscally responsible and this is what savings are for.

After the initial shock, we started looking for any sort of silver lining. Then, it dawned on us…WE NEVER TOOK OUR HONEYMOON. It was difficult to plan due to mismatching work schedules, but now we have an open-ended time frame to finally make it happen, and to just take time to be newlyweds. Not PTO. Just TO.

2023 hasn’t started off the way we expected, but I believe we will come out of this stronger and ready to take on our next challenge, whatever form it may take.

Improvise. Adapt. Overcome.

Together for 10 years and we’ll face this together, too. Cheers to silver linings.
