PLEASE DON'T TAKE ADVANTAGE....

On Friday afternoon I took a call from a candidate. Nothing new there. But let me explain the background.

A couple of days previously I'd called her to make her an offer. This should have been a great call to make, but this time it wasn't. The reason? The offer was around 25% below what she really wanted, which was at or around market rate.

I felt embarrassed to make the call, but the client had been adamant. "She's out of work and so hardly in a position to dictate terms" had been his stance. He was looking to take advantage of her situation.

Remarkably, the candidate said that she'd give the offer genuine consideration. But she had just been invited to another interview.

And so to Friday's call. The candidate phoned to say that she'd been offered the other role. And they hadn't simply tried to improve on her existing offer; they'd actually offered her what she was worth. Unsurprisingly she'd accepted this alternative offer and I was genuinely delighted for her.

I informed my client. "I'll match their offer" was his reply. But it was too late, the damage had already been done.

The moral of the story? Please don't try to take advantage of a candidate's situation. Nothing good will come of it.

Can we please STOP complaining about the recruiters and salespeople "annoying" you in your DMs?!

Recruiters and salespeople are trying to do their jobs by sending you DMs.

So next time you're outwardly rude to someone, or worse still - screenshotting someone's message and making fun of them - just remember that these are real people just trying to do their jobs, so they can feed their family.

There's people out there who don't receive messages like that, because they're under-skilled, and they're the ones who would be grateful to receive the messages you're getting.

So you should be more respectful, and happy that you're receiving 50-odd messages.

It's probably because you're bloody good at what you do.
