I picked up my next podcast guest’s book–The Freelance Mindset: Unleashing Your Side Hustles for Better Work, Play, and Life–initially for two reasons:

  1. to support a friend who contributed, and

  2. I was going through a soul-sucking job search with no promises of resulting in a full-time role, so I wanted to know my options.

But when I read about Joy Batra’s own experience and the research she had done on the freelance approach to work, I knew it was going to change my life.

Once you take the mind of a freelancer, a ton of possibilities open up for building your dream life, and this book really helped me see that.

Here’s how Joy’s story helped me:

1️⃣ Joy shares about her experience moving to different countries as a kid with her parents, and what it took to adjust to new cultures. She had the experience of feeling out of place or like a misfit, ultimately realizing that feeling different might be a good thing.

🙋🏼‍♀️ When I’ve moved abroad and even regionally within the United States as an adult, I have been very aware of feeling different or like a misfit (adjusting to a new culture is a thing!). The skills that develop from that are SO helpful for navigating life.

2️⃣ Joy defines her identity as much by her creative side as she does by her career label. She finds creative outlets in places like Bollywood acting and taking dance lessons, even if she’s not going to monetize those outlets. And, she’s defined herself on her own terms.

🙋🏼‍♀️ I’ve always felt a deep desire to include my global citizen identity and other interesting quirks within my answer to, “What do you do?” Living in a society focused on professional labels, I found that the space created for people to be their whole selves wasn’t quite what I needed.

3️⃣ Joy accepts a job, needs that job, and needs the salary for that job, but she feels her heart pulled in a different direction. As the starting date for that job looms in the future, the pressure of wanting to make the “right” decision starts to make a dent.

🙋🏼‍♀️ There have been a few times in my life where I’ve said “yes” to something where I should have said “no.” The people-pleasing side of me was focused on not letting anyone down, but to honor who I truly was, I knew I would have to have tough conversations and ultimately follow the path that was meant for me.
