I am so proud of Simmons University for being selected as one of only 25 U.S. colleges and universities to receive the first Carnegie Leadership for Public Purpose Classification! This new classification recognizes institutions that have committed to campus-wide efforts to advance leadership in pursuit of public goods like justice, equity, and diversity. This honor is a national recognition of the unique brand of leadership we have developed and advanced at Simmons. Not only is leadership a core part of the Simmons DNA as evident in our founding 125 years ago, but it is woven throughout our academic curriculum, various leadership centers, faculty research and publications, and co-curricular programming, among others.

This classification truly is a community-wide effort and a result of the many ways leadership is infused in the work Simmons faculty, staff, students, and alums do each day through their teaching, scholarship, learning, and service.

Today, Simmons awarded more than 500 baccalaureate degrees and nearly 2,100 graduate degrees. It is my honor to celebrate our students and all of their hard work and perseverance in reaching this tremendous milestone. Congratulations to all of our graduates, as well as all of the  family and friends whose labor, love, and sacrifices have made this day possible for our students.

I hope you will carry Simmons with you – this commitment to doing well and doing good as inclusive leaders – wherever your path takes you. It is your determination and courage that will serve you well as you continue your studies, or begin or continue your careers. This year is also particularly memorable as Simmons celebrates its 125th anniversary. Our institution was founded for equality 125 years ago. This ideal – using education to advance social and economic equity – is the core DNA of Simmons University. It remains at the heart of who we are today. Because when Simmons leads, the world works better.

On behalf of the Trustees, faculty, and staff of the University, congratulations to our new alumni!  Thank you for all of your hard work, we are excited to see what you’ll do.
