Just returned from VidCon 2024, a cornerstone event in the creator industry. Here are a few key insights:

The Maturation of Long-From

YouTube is still the most trusted platform in the creator economy and the undisputed king of long-form. Long-form allows for branding and conversion alike, meaning that so often people are talking about different things when they are evaluating long-form success.

Creators are still wrapping their heads around the idea that their channel is only successful for brands when consistently delivering conversions on performance campaigns. This only underscores the importance of having data to identify the right creators – something that a lot of people talk about but few actually do. Having real meaningful historical performance data is something we continue to pride ourselves on at Outloud & it's a huge reason we continue to be so successful with our creator recommendations.

The Evolution of Short-form

A lot of the conversations I had at happy hours, parties, and in the hallways of the Anaheim Convention Center centered around the future of TikTok. TLDR: there’s concern about the future of the platform. For now, it’s full-steam ahead for brands on TikTok & for creators the message is clear: work now to have your audience across multiple platforms.

YouTube still has the trust of America and as it continues to make a push for YouTube Shorts to be the premier option in the short-form category there are growing pains. For brands, the lack of a clickable link is a real issue and for creators there’s still lingering fear about Shorts views negatively impacting the demographics of their viewing audience, which would impact their ability to monetize their channel to the utmost. While you can view demographics by long-form or short-form –when you have both long & short-form on the same platform it can create confusion and challenges. It's all part of the maturation of YouTube Shorts.

The New and Emerging

There’s huge opportunities for AI to streamline processes and empower scalability and speed. But there’s also the need to communicate with creators on a human level where communications are clear and tailored to their situation.  The need for human connection and engagement has never been higher. Moving forward, I forecast AI 1) being used to automate “simple” content creation and 2)  augmenting creator content to make the “complicated” that much better.

It was also fun to see LinkedIn get some airtime. While LinkedIn is not the right platform for low CPMs, it is an emerging platform to connect with both B2B and B2C audiences in a way that delivers results.

And CTV is also a mega-trend that we all want to be tuned into. It’s not uncommon for 50% of a creator’s YouTube audience to watch creator videos on their TV and creators must be able to connect with their audience on the “big” screen mobile devices alike.

I had the pleasure of spending a couple days in Orlando at the Ragan Disney Social Media conference last week. I shared a few words about influencer marketing and enjoyed hearing perspectives across all things social.

Here’s a few of the key takeaways from the state of social media in general that I thought were worth sharing.

Old Distinctions No Longer Apply – There’s no longer a meaningful distinction between paid and unpaid content and "paid drives earned on owned". Algorithms make it hard to push content from brand accounts without paid and the focus today is on results and not building a large audience to serve brand content to. With influencer marketing, we’ve seen user generated content, paid social, and influencer content converge. Set your influencers objectives and strategy – and then the paid vs. organic debate will become clear.

BeReal Is Here, At Least For A Hot Minute – BeReal has been downloaded 28 million times and reached the #1 spot on the free app list in the App Store for July, August, and September. Brands can’t have an account and no advertising is allowed on the app – at least not yet. Staying power? Don’t hold your breath, but there’s a wave to ride if you’ve got your longboard and wetsuit.

Now More Than Ever, Think Strategy – Whether you’re thinking about paid media or influencer marketing, the key is to be strategic in deciding what platform you want to participate in.

Instagram is all about video today – and they are pushing you to use paid Reels by creating a value proposition there.

Facebook offers micro-targeted and high qualified audiences.

Twitter is scale-challenged, but gives you the chance to respond real-time and become an authority quickly.

LinkedIn offers high-value professional thought leadership & when done right allows you to use storytelling to have your brand pillars come to life.

TikTok is irreverent, playful, and timely – which works great when you can move fast and innovate.

Pinterest, with all its visual splendor, is a bit of a utilitarian app with all its visual search capabilities.

With influencer it’s the same song-different verse, as you need to decide your objectives and which influencer social media platform is right to help you achieve your goals.

Your Employees Are Influencers – It’s wise to utilize your employee influencers. Employees know your company needs, target audience, and bring wonderful diversity of through and approach. Plus with the sophistication of the algorithms, multiple voices really help to cover lots of individual’s feeds with different content, trends, and influencers. I see you Taylor & Naomi.

Stay Human – With all the focus on the digital, algorithms and platforms it can be easy to lose sight of the human element – but that’s what makes it so damn important. Feed honesty, vulnerability, and real faces with all that you do. Your audience is human so stay human with all your social posts and interactions, y’all. #ragandisney #influencermarketing
