Madeline Pumariega

Proud alumna and first female president to lead Miami Dade College.

Madeline Pumariega, a trailblazer and history-maker, is the first female president of Miami Dade College (MDC), where she had once been a student-athlete.

Her dedication to innovation in higher education grew from her personal journey as a student and an administrator at MDC.

Before leading MDC, Pumariega made history as the first female and Hispanic chancellor of the Florida College System (FCS), driving initiatives to make college accessible and affordable, especially in high-demand fields.

Under her leadership, numerous colleges in the FCS system excelled in national rankings, with Florida being recognized as number one in higher education.

Transitioning to Tallahassee Community College as the executive vice president and provost in 2019, she spearheaded innovative strategies in academic affairs, student affairs, and workforce development, particularly during the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pumariega also shares her expertise as an Affiliate Professor of Leadership at NYU Steinhardt School.

Her commitment to educational excellence is further showcased through her past role as president of Take Stock in Children, where she focused on empowering students to break the cycle of poverty through education.

With a strong academic foundation, including studies towards a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and a Master of Education (MEd), Pumariega leverages her experience to advocate for students' upward economic mobility.

Throughout her 20 years at Miami Dade College, she held various positions that paved the way for her current role as president, fulfilling her mission to support students in achieving their aspirations.
